Bail reform drops jail population by 20 percent but upsets some sectors

New Jersey’s criminal justice reform is impressive but imperfect

The number of pretrial inmates dropped 20.3 percent from 7,173 to 5,718.

On the other hand, bail bonds businesses are losing profits. Bail Bonds company in Turnersville, Gloucester County has reported losses close to 90%. Critics also point out that potentially dangerous persons are being set free. And last, the costs of running the program are more than what the judiciary makes from fees. According to a local Bakersfield bail bondsman (company website) the same situation might occur in California after the new bail bond reform bill passes.
